Celebrating Clean Waters Through Art: Horacio’s Role in Fabricating Habitat by John Magnan

On November 30, 2012, the heart of downtown New Bedford welcomed a striking tribute to clean water and environmental preservation with the unveiling of Habitat, a public art installation celebrating the health of Buzzards Bay.

Designed by renowned local artist John Magnan, Habitat is a set of seven sculptures, each depicting steel and masonry representations of eelgrass—one of the Bay’s essential, life-supporting plants. These towering, 12-foot structures evoke an underwater meadow, conjuring images of Buzzards Bay’s vibrant and thriving ecosystem.

For Horacio’s Inc., Habitat was a fabrication project with special significance. Each piece needed precision engineering and artistry to ensure that Magnan’s vision—a delicate blend of organic form and structural resilience—was realized to perfection. Working with steel and masonry materials, Horacio’s achieved the illusion of swaying eelgrass, each sculpture balanced to withstand New England’s varied climate while embodying a sense of movement and life.

The installation, now a celebrated landmark, continues to serve as a symbol of clean water’s beauty and importance. For everyone involved in its creation, Habitat stands as a testament to the powerful connection between art, community, and environmental stewardship.
